The Sedgwick County Zoo opened in 1971 and is ranked among the best zoos in the USA. There are more than 3,000 individual animals and 400 different species. This is the number 1 family attraction in all of Kansas. There are sections devoted to the Tropics, Amphibians, Penguin Cove, Children’s farm, Orangutan & Chimpanzee Habitat, and special areas for Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America.
The Keeper of the Plains stands at the confluence of the Big and Little Arkansas rivers with hands raised in supplication to the Great Spirit. Renowned Kiowa-Comanche artist Black bear Bosin donated the Keeper of the Plains to the citizens of Wichita on May 18, 1974.Since the sculpture's installation to commemorate the United States Bicentennial.
